Onion is an herbaceous biennal plant in the amaryllis family grown for its edible bulb.
º More than 250 tons marketed Onion should be native to Southwestern Asia (Iran,Central Asia,Pakistan). They are among the world's oldest cultivat-
yearly ed plants. They were used as far as 5000 BC in China. Ancient Egyptians were regarding the spherical bulb as a
symbol of the universe. The Romans were using onions, as attested by the author Pliny The Elder who wrote about
Pompei's onions and cabbages. They introduced it to Britain. During the middle ages, cuisine regularly featured beans,
cabbages and onions. Onions were used also as rent payments or wedding gifts.
Nutrition Facts Native Americans were using wild varieties of onions. North America discovered onions when pilgrims brought them
in the Mayflower, in order to be a garden crop.
